I've just updated my
Application Development Resources with a bunch of new content. ? For example, Lotus Education On Demand released a great set of tutorials on
Building Databases with Domino Designer 7.
This free tutorial is designed to take you through the steps of building a fully functional Domino database using Domino Designer 7. You will be introduced to all the necessary design elements such as forms and views, as well as actions, agents and outlines. Each part of the course is accompanied by a database file. This database provides completed examples of the exercises in each part.
- Part 1: Getting Started with Domino Databases: This first part will provide you with the information you need to know to get started developing Domino databases, from the basics of working in the Designer client to creating a functional database. (Timing: 4 to 5 hours)
- Part 2: Adding Functionality to Forms: In this part you will use formulas to add greater functionality to your database forms. (Timing: 4 to 5 hours)
- Part 3: Views and Navigation: At the end of Part 1, you will create a very simple view to display the documents in the Time-Off Request database. In Part 3, you will enhance the view with special columns and create new views using selection formulas. You will also learn additional options for database navigation. (Timing: 3 to 4 hours)
- Part 4: Agents and Security: You will learn about the functionality of agents within a database and how to secure the design and content of a database. (Timing: 3 to 4 hours)
As we move closer to the next year's release of Notes/Domino, your company should be extremely excited about upgrading and enhancing your current Notes and Domino applications, as well as thinking up dozens of new applications you can develop with great new features.

Here's a little trick to write samples that involves data binding controls to a database. It's very inconvenient to have to package a sample database with your code (especially when it's just a few lines of code in a blog), and just making sure your users have SQL Server installed is no small thing. All this just diverts the attention from what really matters: your sample code. It's a little-known feature that XmlDataSource enables you to declaratively expose sample data to the page. Here's how it's done:asp:XmlDataSource runat="server" ID="data"> Data> colors> color name="Red" value="#FF0000"/> color name="Green" value="#00FF00"/> color name="Blue"...(

Today IBM is launching a new program called "
ShortCuts". ?This is a series of short (four minute long) podcasts, which cover a variety of computer related topics which touch our "digital lives." ? This may include things such as email and instant messaging etiquette, security topics, and password management tips. ? These podcasts are not about IBM/Lotus products, and are not intended to be a sales pitch or feature demo. ? Instead they are supposed to simply provide the listeners with information or advice, from an IBM employee with knowledge in the given topic.
The first "Cut" features
Rocky Oliver on the topic of fighting spyware. ?A session with me, will be coming up soon!
ShortCuts will be available on both the IBM web site (with RSS feed) on iTunes, and on MyYahoo.
Please take a few minutes and listen to them, and let us know what you think. ? I believe this is a great idea, and hope it reaches a very large audience, so please don't hesitate to let us know what you like, and what could be improved. ? Way to go IBM!

Earlier this spring we published a really popular series of short, focused, online ASP.NET videos that we called the “How Do I?” series. The series walked through how to use Visual Web Developer to take advantage of the cool new ASP.NET 2.0 features like Master Pages, Membership, Role Management, Profiles, 3-tier Data Access, Themes, Web Parts, etc.If you haven’twatched these videos yet, I'd highly recommend setting aside an hour or two to review them all (each video is only 10-15 minutes long). They are a really great way to quickly obtain a very good understanding of the new ASP.NET 2.0 features and how they all fit together. You can watch each video online for free here. The series was so popular that we asked Joe Stagner...(

I found this great link the other day from SSW discussing recommended coding standards. It provides a categorized list of best practices to follow when doing software (and specifically .NET) development. You can read them all here. Very useful stuff. Hope this helps,Scott

As most of you know I work in the marketing organization of Lotus. ? So today's post is going to deviate a bit from my Lotus Notes tips, and discuss marketing.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on why "360" has become the moniker du jour? ? ?XBox360. Nike360. ?ESPN360? ? I'm confused!!!
Does this mean these products have come "full circle"? ?Is it an attempt to "be cool" and relate to the youth extreme sports culture where 360 is a term for spins? ? ?Would Lotus360, or Notes360 sell more products? ? How about Notes
420? ?Is this silly 360 naming a North American trend only, or does it translate world wide?
Please share your thoughts. ? ?BTW, my mention of new Notes names above is completely in jest, not something we are planning on doing.

Joe Stagnerhas released the first 2 "How Do I" Videos in his new series on learning "Atlas." We have had so much success with the short "How Do I" video format that we plan on releasing tons and tons more of these over the course of the year. I know you will enjoy it. Also, we've added some new design flair to the www.asp.net site so be sure to explore -- you'll find it easier then ever to find more content then you can handle ;) -- check out the new videos page, essential downloads, books page, starter kits, live webcasts, data tutorials, and more. We are also just beginning work on a *huge* overhaul to our www.asp.net experience -- we probably won't be able to show you much of the work until towards the end of the year, but we are investing...(

One of the things that I rarely have the time to do is to create really nice looking web templates. Stuff that is just graphically pleasing, between work, school and having a social life, I just don't get time to do it. But reading one of the many blogs that I read in the morning, I came across this site called Open Source Web Designs. It's a great idea, and a fun way to share your artistic talents. Each template has it's own EULA, so you'll have to have a look to determine if it will work for you (and your business if that's the case), but the idea of having a good looking CSS designed page it awesome. I would love to see someone do something similar to this, but instead of simple HTML and CSS, to use Master Pages, HTML and CSS so that you...(
