Pop Ups as a Sign of Market Opportunity

If the top competing sites are monetized by feeds from third tier search engines and / or off topic pop ups you can probably buy targeted ads on their sites cheap. You don't need to rank if they already are, and if the ad buy helps you rank that is a bonus.

Overheard on the way to Seattle

Quick overview of my trip so far...
  • On the flight from Boston to Seattle I overheard a conversation from the row in front of me
Passenger 1: "So why are you going to Seattle?"
Passenger 2: "To visit a friend of mine, Ray Ozzie"
Passenger 1: "Really?"
Passenger 2: "Yes, my husband and I are friends with him and his wife. ?Do you know him?"
Passenger 1: "No, I just know of him"
  • I saw Notes 7 in use by a business traveller on my way to the bathroom.
  • There were lots of university students flying home for break, they ALL were using Macs, I did not see a single person under 25 on the plane using a PC laptop.
  • The bus from Seattle to Vancouver is inexpensive, and pretty easy to use.
  • Two days in Vancouver is not enough. ?My heart belongs in this city for several reasons. ;-)
  • Seeing the Spirit of the West perform on St. Patrick's day is a lot of fun.
  • Just checked into the Fairmount Olympic Hotel in Seattle.... wow! ?This staff knows how to treat a guest! ?The doorman looked at my luggage tag when he took my bag from the car, and called me by name as he opened the door. ?The receptionist came out from around the counter to hand me my room key, and walked me to the elevator.

Good Response from AjaxWorld keynote

We got some good feedback from my AjaxWorld keynote ... If you were there, I'd love to hear your feedback, thoughts... please comment here or drop me a line ... Microsoft Not a Cathedral; Open Source Not a Bazaar NEW YORK -- It's not every day that you see a Microsoft employee demonstrating Microsoft software running natively on Linux. Yet that's exactly what happened at AJAXWorld here, as Brad Abrams, group program manager at Microsoft for ASP.NET AJAX (codenamed Atlas) did today. (Note, as Patrick says, I do over generalize the Cathedral and Bazaar concept slightly to make a point... Thanks Patrick...) "What Does AJAX Bring to the Client-Server Balance?" Asks AJAXWorld Keynoter, Microsoft's Brad Abrams Abrams came out of the gate fast, demoing...(read more)

Google is the Biggest Web Spammer

If spam is hosted by Google, ranked by Google, and displays Google ads, then why the need for outsourcing that fault? Why can't we just call those people Google affiliates and leave it at what it is, Google = spam?

Microsoft in the OpenAjax Alliance

Read Brad's post about it. We've been paying a lot of attention to standardization and interoperability with our AJAX framework since the beginning, but I like that we're getting even more involved via the OpenAjax Alliance . Read More......(read more)

AjaxWorld Keynote: Ajax in the Balance

I had a great time this morning doing the closing keynote… I talked about how great, productive Ajax application are optimized for a set of balances. Client and server, proprietary and open source, established and emerging technology, etc. The most fun for me was the demo… I started off by showing how trivial it is for a wide range of developers to incrementally Ajax enable their applications with NO client side javascript code with ASP.NET AJAX… And of course, I showed how it just magically works great in Safari on the mac. Next I showed off a little of the cool VS Orcas JavaScript work including Intellisense, statement completion and type inferencing . In the same demo I showed how easy it is to use a Dojo widget with ASP.NET AJAX… I used...(read more)

The Best Steak Anywhere !

I happened to get into a conversation at Ajax World with the CTO of a medium sized company with a pretty large infrastructure that is considering moving from Java to .NET After the days events went up the block from the hotel to Morton's. The BEST Steak-house in the country (says me ) http://www.mortons.com/ The Food is awesome, the service is great, and George is the best bartender on the planet. Check them out. There are about 35 of them around the country but the Mid-town Manhattan location is my favorite. On 5 th avenue, but the entrance is on 45 th around Madison. Read More......(read more)

This week at Ajax World

It’s conference season. Last week I was at the PHP Quebec conference. http://conf.phpquebec.com/ This week ……… I’m in New York City this week speaking at Ajax World. Just being here and staying at the beautiful Roosevelt Hotel at 45 th & Madison has been a fun blast from the past. I worked in Manhattan for five years. I’ve run into a number of old friends and coworkers, and, even though I’m pretty over committed these days at work and have spent much of the conference in my hotel room working, I’ve managed to tour the expo floor, meet with many of the vendors and get a look at their products, talk to lots of customers at the Microsoft booth, and attend some interesting sessions. There are about 1000 people here and there have been a few...(read more)

Rory versus Scoble - Full Contact Blogging.

Rory and (Robert) Scoble are at war. In my time at Microsoft I’ve gotten to know both of them. I “lovingly” tell you they’re both egomaniacs (as am I!) Rory and I have have found much to argue about. I think because we are so different, but many mutual acquaintances say it’s because we are alike apart from the decades that separate us in age. Scoble has taken to bashing Microsoft these days and Rory is taking him to the woodshed for it. Robert, your opinions have made you famous, but when some one with comparatively little business experience (and I don’t mean that as an insult, but even using my own experiences as a comparative benchmark, I believe this is accurate), leaves a company and them makes a big deal about what a mess your “old” company...(read more)

Microsoft Joins OpenAJAX Alliance

I'm really pleased to be able to announce that Microsoft today joined the OpenAjax alliance . The OpenAjax alliance is a group of vendors, open source projects and companies using AJAX that are focused on developing common AJAX standards and ensuring interoperability across different AJAX frameworks, tools and technologies. Joining the group will help ensure that the Microsoft AJAX Library and ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Extensions integrate well with other AJAX frameworks and server technologies. Interoperability has always been a key ASP.NET AJAX deliverable. We made the client-side Microsoft AJAX Library work seamlessly with other server frameworks from the very beginning, and during the beta we went through and renamed several JavaScript classes/functions...(read more)

IE6 VPC Refresh

Cross-posted from the IE Blog In my original blog post about releasing the IE6 Virtual PC Image, we mentioned that it would expire on April 1st, 2007 (no, it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke), and that we’d be releasing a new VPC image to replace it sometime in March. Well, I’m happy to report that I propped the new VHD up on Monday morning. You can download the image here . Take note that a free download of Virtual PC 2007 is now available, replacing VPC2004. I didn’t make any major changes to the image other than adding the latest security updates. I also managed to reduce the download size to just under 400 megs, shaving off almost 100 megs from the previous image size. This image is time-bombed to July 23 rd , but we will continue to release...(read more)
