New “Orcas” Language Feature: Lambda Expressions

Last month I started a series of posts covering some of the new VB and C# language features that are coming as part of the Visual Studio and .NET Framework "Orcas" release. Here are the first two posts in the series: Automatic Properties, Object Initializer and Collection Initializers Extension Methods Today's blog post covers another fundamental new language feature: Lambda Expressions . What are Lambda Expressions? C# 2.0 (which shipped with VS 2005) introduced the concept of anonymous methods, which allow code blocks to be written "in-line" where delegate values are expected. Lambda Expressions provide a more concise, functional syntax for writing anonymous methods. They end up being super useful when writing LINQ query expressions - since...(read more)

Launching a New Site: Recycling Traffic for Longterm Profits

If you buy targeted advertising and have a quality site it doesn't hurt to buy a bit of exposure the get the ball rolling. If you can break even while buying and selling ads that send visitors to / through your site without making it look cheap, tacky, or untrustworthy you are ahead, because that traffic will improve the algorithmic trustworthiness of your site. Exposure breeds exposure, etc.

Tip/Trick: Enabling SSL on IIS 7.0 Using Self-Signed Certificates

SSL enables browsers to communicate with a web-server over a secure channel that prevents eavesdropping, tampering and message forgery. You should always use SSL for login pages where users are entering usernames/passwords, as well as for all other sensitive pages on sites (for example: account pages that show financial or personal information). Configuring SSL on Windows with previous versions of IIS has been a pain. Figuring out how to install and manage a certificate, and then associate it with a web-site, is something I bet most web developers don't know how to enable. The good news is that IIS 7.0 makes it radically easier to configure and enable SSL. IIS 7.0 also now has built-in support for creating "Self Signed Certificates" that enable...(read more)

OpenAjax meetings

It was my great pleasure to be at the face to face OpenAjax Alliance meetings for the first time last month. Thanks to the nice people at IBM for hosting them. I really enjoyed the discussions with Alex from Dojo , Gideon from OpenSpot and many others. There were also great demos of OpenAjax-based interoperability. It was also the occasion for me to visit New-York where I hadn't been in more than fifteen years. After the initial shock of not recognizing the skyline from the plane, which affected me more than I expected, I just realized how much I love the atmosphere of a city where people actually walk. It reminded me in a way of Paris, where I lived most of my life. Here are some pictures... Atlas in New-York A walk in the park. The weather...(read more)

Effectively & Profitably Recycling Content

Many people are recycling and reformatting various ideas to promote them in lists of top 10 xyz's. The problem with formatting them as such is that one can get similar from going to Del.icio.us or StumbleUpon. If you add context to your page, and state why the top 10 things are the best your page is much more linkworthy.

Compacting XP VPC Images

Someone had posted a comment on my blog asking how I get my VPC images down to a reasonable size, so I figured I'd share it here. It's not the most fun process, but it does manage to get a VPC image down from about 5+ gigs, to about 1.5 or so. To start, make sure you do not have undo disks turned on. Create a backup copy of your VPC image, you'll need this later, and it's good to have in case anything goes wrong. In the Add/Remove Components in the control panel, remove any software (applications and Windows components) that you don't need Clear the DLL cache at the command prompt, type " sfc /cachesize=1 " reboot the computer at the command prompt, type " sfc /purgecache " Delete all $something$ files from the %windir% directory except $hf_mig$....(read more)
